BrainPaws uses a deterministic, rules-based algorithm — the same principles that have been tested in classrooms for decades, not a black-box model. Here is exactly how it works:

• Difficulty adjusts on every answer. Answer quickly and correctly and the next fact gets a little harder. Miss or hesitate and it gets a little easier. No learning phase required — it adapts from the very first card.
• Missed facts come back sooner. Each fact has a score. A correct answer raises it; a miss drops it. Low-score facts are pulled back into the deck more often. Known facts fade into the background.
• Practice ends on a win. If a round is going badly, it quietly gets shorter and always ends on a correct answer. Research consistently shows that ending on a success — not a failure — is what brings kids back.
• A gentle daily limit. Once a child has done a healthy amount of practice, the app notices and encourages a break. A little practice often beats a long session once in a while.

The result is a practice loop that feels easy when a child is struggling and challenging when they are ready — without any server, any model, or any data leaving the device.
